Community Partners Show Love to Combat Hunger

Hunger in Northeast Ohio is a bigger issue than most people think. Cuyahoga County had the highest number of food insecure residents in the state of Ohio in 2013, at approximately 241,400 individuals. Cuyahoga County was also home to the largest number of food insecure children in the state of Ohio, at 66,870 children, according to the Cleveland Food Bank (see more at: www.greaterclevelandfoodbank.org). By partnering with local organizations in the fight against hunger, the American Mutual Life Association (AMLA) wants to do something about that.

Throughout November, the AMLA will have its annual “Show Your Love” Food Drive in an effort to stock local food banks and pantries for the coming holiday season. This year, the AMLA has partnered with NSL Analytical Services, Inc. and NSL Metallurgical, both located in Warrensville Heights.

“It is part of the AMLA’s mission as a fraternal benefit society to work for the greater good of the community,” says AMLA President, Tim Percic. “Many of our 8,500 members live and work in the area, so it is a lot like neighbors helping neighbors.”

The AMLA is a fraternal benefit society established in 1910 as the Slovenian Mutual Benefit Society as it primarily catered to the needs of Slovenian immigrants to the Cleveland area in the early 1900’s. In the 1960’s the name was changed to the American Mutual Life Association, and today, the AMLA’s focus is life insurance and annuity products with a strong sense of fraternalism for the surrounding community.

The AMLA is getting help in this food drive from NSL Analytical Services, Inc. Both NSL locations are in Warrensville Heights, and have a similar belief in helping to build stronger community.

“NSL has been a supportive community partner in Warrensville Heights, and saw this as an opportunity to expand our reach to all of Northeast Ohio,” says Larry Somrack, President of NSL.

NSL is an independent materials testing laboratory established in 1945, whose services comprise a broad spectrum of analytical testing for quality control, failure analysis, product performance, and material selection and characterization. NSL is offering a $10 discount to any of their clients who bring in a donation of a nonperishable food item when they drop off a sample.

NSL will be accepting food donations at either of their Warrensville Heights facilities during normal business hours (8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday): NSL Analytical corporate offices at 4450 Cranwood Parkway or NSL Metallurgical 4535 Renaissance Parkway.

Additional community partners include: SouthWest Urology in Middleburg Heights, the Slovenian American Times in Willoughby Hills, the parishes of St. Mary of the Assumption (Collinwood) and St. Vitus (Cleveland), and the American Slovenian Club in Fairport Harbor.

SouthWest Urology is dedicated to providing quality, compassionate urinary treatment and care at 7 locations around Northeast Ohio, with their 6900 Pearl Road (2nd Floor) location in Middleburg Heights as their primary food drop location (between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM).

The Slovenian American Times, a monthly cultural publication which caters the Slovenian community and is located at 33977 Chardon Road in Willoughby Hills.

St. Vitus Roman Catholic Church is located on 6019 Lausche Avenue in Cleveland.

St. Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic parish in the Collinwood neighborhood of Cleveland operates an independent food pantry at their property at 15519 Holmes Avenue. Donations taken there will benefit their food distribution service. Likewise, donations given to the American Slovenian Club at 617 1/2 Third St., Fairport Harbor will be given to St. Anthony Food Pantry.

The AMLA hopes to collect more than one thousand pounds of food by the end of the month. Details and updates will be tracked on the AMLA website, www.AmericanMutual.org/food. When the “Show Your Love Heart” is overflowing, then you’ll know the goal was met.
